Explanation of the four qualities of a good translation
'TUAA" is a translation quality framework put forth by ETEN's Innovation Lab to fit more with church-based Bible translation.
T - Trustworthy
U - Understandable
A - Appealing
A - Appropriate
Definitions - 4 Qualities of a Good Translation:
TRUSTWORTHY: A good translation expresses the same meaning as the original text.
- Nothing has been added that should not be added
- Nothing has been left out that should not be left out
- The meaning has not been changed
- Implicit information is included
UNDERSTANDABLE: A good translation is clear and understandable.
- The language used is clear
- The language flows naturally and easily
APPEALING: A good translation is pleasing to read, watch or listen to.
- The translation sounds natural
- The translation has variation
- The translation is not too wordy
- The translation is beautiful (well-crafted)
APPROPRIATE: A good translation fits the local context.
- The appropriate translation type is used
- The appropriate language variant is used
- The appropriate language register is used
