What is a 'translation comparison'?
- A ‘translation comparison’ consists of multiple machine-translated versions of a text, side-by-side for comparison
- You will see 4-6 versions of the same translated text, all in a row next to the source text
- You will pick which translation version you think is the best out of all of them
Why do we do a translation comparison?
The translation comparison assignment is very important because:
- It helps Avodah to know which trained AI translation model provides the best quality translation
- Future machine translations will come from this selection of ‘best’ translation
- Future machine translations will improve based on this selection
When you open the assignment, you will see something like this (colors may vary):
Assignment Instructions: DEMO VIDEO
1) Read the 'Source Text' (first column) in the first row
2) Read each of the translations in that row
3) Decide which translation is the best one
4) Select the box of the best translation and highlight it in yellow
5) When you have completed the translation comparisons, your assignment should look similar to this:
Every row should have at least ONE highlighted box (here we used bright yellow).
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Some translation versions will have only very small differences - such as punctuation and capitalization differences. Look at each version carefully
- Be sure to only highlight ONE box for each row of translations...
- BUT, if some translations in the same row are EXACTLY the same (vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, word order, grammar, etc.), then you must highlight ALL that are the same (see example, below):

In Row #8, above, two of the translations are EXACTLY the same, so they are both highlighted (bright yellow).
